Community-Led Mental Health Model Reaches 132 Migrants from 36 Countries
Safetynet Primary Care's groundbreaking partnership with the Irish Red Cross has provided mental health support to 132 clients from 36 different nationalities since its launch in May 2024.
The community-led model features native Arabic-speaking psychotherapists working alongside Safetynet's mental health and clinical teams, with online interpreters available for all other languages. This approach eliminates the language and cultural barriers that have historically prevented migrants from accessing care.
"We're seeing patients who would never have accessed mainstream mental health services now engaging regularly with support," said Liban Abanur, Safetynet's mental health coordinator. "When someone from your own community, who understands your journey and speaks your language, is part of your care team, it changes everything."
The programme was launched by Robert Watt, Secretary General of the Department of Health, as part of Safetynet's Strategic Plan 2025-2028. Cultural group therapy programmes are now being developed to promote integration and community healing.
