Safetynet Contributes to HSE Pilot Proving Rapid Testing Transforms Healthcare Access

Safetynet Primary Care played a key role in a successful HSE pilot programme, demonstrating that Rapid Diagnostic Testing (RDT) can provide accurate and accessible screening for blood-borne viruses among vulnerable populations.

As one of two pilot sites, Safetynet conducted testing at the National Transit Centre in Citywest between January and November 2024. Across both sites, 227 people were tested for HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C.

Results were overwhelmingly positive, with 94% of service users rating their experience as "excellent." The tests proved accurate with results available in just 20-40 minutes—crucial for mobile populations who struggle with traditional follow-up appointments.

"It's a great test to have, marvellous to have a test that you can use so easily," one service provider noted.

The HSE pilot evaluation, published in August 2025, recommends national rollout. The programme combines oral swab tests for HIV and Hepatitis C with a single finger-prick test for Hepatitis B, making screening quick and minimally invasive for international protection applicants and other vulnerable groups.
