Residential Treatment Services

For people with complex health needs, stable accommodation and consistent medical care can be transformative. Safetynet provides the GP services that underpin Dublin Simon Community's residential treatment programmes.

How this service helps

Safetynet Primary Care provides GP Care for the Step Up Step Down (SUSD), Respite/BBV and Stabilisation facilities operated by Dublin Simon Community at the new purpose-built facility on Usher’s Island. Safetynet is present at the residential unit every weekday to provide the complex GP care necessary for the success of this project.

These services provide stable, supported environments where people experiencing homelessness can receive the level of care they need—whether recovering after hospital discharge, engaging with treatment for blood-borne viruses, or accessing intensive medical and psychiatric support to address complex needs. For patients whose health challenges fall between what emergency accommodation can manage and what requires hospital admission, these facilities fill a critical gap, enabling comprehensive assessment, 24-hour care, and the sustained support needed to remove barriers to exiting homelessness.

Step Up Step Down (SUSD)

The SUSD facility provides care to people who are experiencing homelessness, facilitating patients’ recuperation for post-hospital discharge and admission. It targets those who are too unwell to stay in emergency accommodation but not sick enough for hospital, and whose conditions are expected to resolve or improve significantly over a 3-week period. It allows for comprehensive health assessment and investigations with 24-hour care.

The Respite/ BBV Unit

The Respite/ BBV unit provides care for people with a blood-borne virus who need support to engage with treatment for their condition. There are eight beds available.

The Stabilisation Unit

The Stabilisation Unit provides short-term (3–6 weeks) residential support for individuals who are registered as homeless within Dublin County. The service is designed to offer intensive medical, psychiatric, and nursing interventions aimed at stabilising clients with complex needs, removing the barriers to exit homelessness.

“Empowering, not imposing - Communities should lead their own healthcare solutions, not just receive them.”
